Seattle-area residents who want to get their groceries delivered from Metropolitan Market have a new option.
Amazon announced Tuesday that it is adding the Seattle-based grocer to its third-party grocery delivery network.
In addition to delivery from Amazon Fresh and its Whole Foods Market subsidiary, Amazon partners with other grocery and speciality retailers to allow orders via its e-commerce site.
Metropolitan Market, which operates 10 locations in the Seattle region, has existing partnerships with both Instacart and DoorDash, two of Amazon’s competitors in the grocery delivery sector.
The deal with Amazon “aligns with our ongoing commitment to serving our guests where they are,” Metropolitan Market CEO Ron Megahan said in a statement.
Christian Seitel, head of U.S. grocery partnerships at Amazon, said partnering with Metropolitan Market broadens its food selection for customers shopping online.
Since Amazon launched the first iteration of Amazon Fresh back in 2007, it has experimented with different models and pricing for grocery delivery. The tech giant, which acquired Whole Foods for $13.7 billion in 2017, still offers grocery delivery from its Amazon Fresh brand, and also operates Amazon Fresh physical stores.
The new offering with Metropolitan Market is available to any customer, though Prime members are eligible for delivery fee discounts. Prime members can get free same-day delivery on orders over $35 if they have Amazon’s recently launched monthly ($9.99) or yearly ($99.99) grocery delivery subscription. That’s on top of the $139/year Prime membership fee.
Prime members who don’t have the monthly or annual subscription get free grocery delivery for orders over $80 in select third-party stores.
Amazon is offering free Metropolitan Market delivery for Prime members on their first three orders above $10 as part of a promotional deal.
Metropolitan Market deliveries via Amazon are initially available to customers in Sammamish, Queen Anne, Tacoma and Crown Hill neighborhoods.
Amazon has a similar third-party delivery deal with All The Best Pet Care, a Seattle-area pet store.
Amazon has been expanding its same-day delivery capabilities as it faces competition from the likes of Walmart and Target.
It’s also deepening a partnership with Grubhub for restaurant delivery.
Uber Eats and Instacart, meanwhile, partnered earlier this year to offer restaurant delivery via Instacart.
