Nordstrom is closing two corporate offices and asking some employees to relocate to its Seattle headquarters, GeekWire has learned.

Nordstrom confirmed that it will let leases expire at its offices in Los Angeles and Chicago, citing low usage of the spaces as a primary reason for the decision.

Most employees based in those cities will transition to full-time remote roles while others will be required to relocate to Seattle, the company said. It will use store locations in Los Angeles and Chicago for smaller team gatherings.

Nordstrom will maintain its office in New York City.

Hundreds of companies have reduced their office footprint in the past several years with the adoption of hybrid or remote work policies.

The real estate consolidation at Nordstrom comes as as the Nordstrom family considers taking the company private.

Nordstrom reported a net loss of $39 million in the first quarter, which missed expectations. Net sales grew 5.1% to $3.2 billion.

The company employed about 54,000 people as of Feb. 3, with 75% of employees supporting stores and 10% supporting its supply chain network, according to the company’s annual SEC filing.

A majority of the company’s corporate roles are based out of Seattle.

Nordstrom had 365 stores as of May 4, up from 347 a year ago. The company closed its flagship San Francisco store last year.
