Portland startup lands $2.7M for autonomous robots designed to disinfect hotels and hospitals Taylor Soper

Haystack Robotics, a Portland, Ore.-based startup developing robotics technology for disinfection use cases, has raised $2.7 million from an investment entity associated with healthcare IT company Agadia Systems.

Haystack’s robots roam around a room and use UV-C light to destroy germs and viruses. The company is targeting hotels, offices, fitness centers, hospitals, senior living facilities, veterinarians, and more.

Haystack is in the early stage of commercialization and has some paying customers.

Founded in 2021, Haystack is one of many companies selling disinfection robots. Some formed out of the pandemic.

Haystack differentiates itself with what it describes as “smart disinfection.”

“Our AI-driven robots can navigate a room completely autonomously and recognize certain high-touch objects that may need extra disinfection,” said Chris Ulum, chief commercialization officer at Haystack.

Haystack is led by CEO Mahadev Eakambaram, a former general manager and senior director at Intel.

The company’s chief engineering officer, Seshu Duvvr, previously spent 33 years at Intel. Ulum was a vice president at AbSci and managing director at National Recovery Technologies.

Haystack employs 25 people. The investment round includes an agreement that would add an additional $1.7 million if certain milestones are met.

Other companies offering similar products include Seattle-based Violett, which raised $2.3 million in 2022 and sells an air purification device.

Silicon Florist previously reported on Haystack’s funding round.
